Registering for self-employed status

It is imperative that you notify the Inland Revenue of your intention to become self-employed, if you have not done so already. You can register by calling the IR Helpline for newly self-employed on 08459 15 45 15 or alternatively, visit their website and complete a CWF1 form. If you need assistance in filling out this form, please contact us on freephone 0800 032 0670 and one of our consultants will be more than happy to assist.

Remember to keep all records of your income and expenses accrued throughout the tax year as the Inspector of taxes may ask to see these at any stage.

Things to be aware of

There are certain things, which as a self-employed contractor you need to adhere to if you want to remain so. A selection of which are:

  • When on site you must sign visitors book each day
  • You must always introduce yourself as an independent self-employed subcontractor
  • Do not make use of employee car parking, unless you pay for it
  • Do not use any subsidised or other employee dining or leisure facilities unless you pay full unsubsidised fees
  • Only attend employee social functions when you have been specifically and personally invited in writing (email will suffice)
  • Do not make any expenses claims against either an agency or a company

All of the above can be construed as employee benefits, which as a self-employed contractor, you are not entitled to.
